Service Family Doctor and Pediatrician image

YOUR DOCTOR,YOUR TRUST

The first reference for your health

The Family Doctor and the Pediatrician provide basic medical assistance and may refer you to the specialized health services you need.

The Family Doctor is also called General Practitioner or Primary Care Physician.

In the case of minors up to 14 years old, you turn to the Pediatrician, also known as the Free Choice Pediatrician.

These professionals can practice in Associated Medical and Pediatric Offices, called Primary Care Units (UCP) and Pediatric Primary Care Units (UCPP).

The Primary Care Units ensure continuous assistance even in the absence of your Family Doctor, who is replaced by other doctors present.

The choice of Family Doctor and Pediatrician is free, but each doctor has a maximum limit of patients they can assist; you will need to ensure that they are still available.

To search for a Family Doctor or a Pediatrician, you can:

  • search for them on the portal;

  • request the list of contracted doctors from your local health authority.

How to choose a pediatrician

To choose a pediatrician, it is necessary to go to the ASL offices of residence with:

  • identification document of the parent or of the person exercising parental authority;

  • self-certification of Family Status;

  • tax code of the newborn issued by the Revenue Agency.

Individuals other than parents or those exercising parental authority must be equipped with a delegation.

How to Choose a Family Doctor

All individuals registered with the National Health Service (SSN) have the right to a family doctor in their local health authority (ASL) of residence. This can be chosen upon reaching the age of 14, or from the age of 6 if requested by parents.

If you are choosing a Family Doctor in Lazio for the first time you can submit the request through the dedicated counters of your local ASL of residence or domicile.

If you have already been assigned a Family Doctor but need to change it you can:

  • revoke the assignment of the current doctor and choose a new doctor at the counters of the ASL of residence;

  • use the online service dedicated to changing and revoking the Family Doctor.

If the Family Doctor has already reached the maximum number of patients, you can request a family reunification for General Practitioner if they already assist the rest of your family. You will need to submit the request at the counter of your ASL of residence.

Temporary Choice of Family Doctor

If you move to another city, you can still request assistance from a Family Doctor for a minimum period of three months up to a maximum of twelve.

After a year, you can further extend the request if necessary, by presenting the same documentation to the local health authority (Asl) of your residence.

This option is granted for needs related to:

  • work;

  • study;

  • health.

To choose a temporary Family Doctor, you need to:

  1. revoke the Family Doctor of your residence and obtain a revocation certificate from the health authority (Asl) of your residence;

  2. choose the new doctor at the health authority (Asl) of your temporary residence.

You will need to go to the health authority (Asl) of the area where you are temporarily residing, bringing with you:

  1. identity document;

  2. Health Card;

  3. revocation certificate from the health authority (Asl) of your residence;

  4. school enrollment certificate (students) or a copy of the employment contract (workers) or medical certificate from the specialist (for health reasons).

If you are a non-EU citizen with a residence permit, you have the right to choose a family doctor who will assist you until the expiration of the residence permit. If the residence permit has expired but you have officially started the renewal process, you can request the continuation of the relationship with the family doctor.

If you are a foreign citizen without a residence permit or a European citizen not registered with the National Health Service, you can still access health service assistance. To do so, you must follow a dedicated path.
